Senior Transition Tips

Helpful Advice for the Transition Process

The senior transition process can be overwhelming to say the least. As seniors remodel their lives to move into a retirement residence, they often feel displaced, disoriented, or even depressed.  A structured plan can significantly reduce the stress and emotion involved in any transition.

Lianas Services provides families with knowledge, resources, and services that support seniors in transition. These services include relocating to a senior’s residence, downsizing, and selling your home or condo, and many more. A Lianas Senior Advisor can act as your coordinator for the following steps.

Step One: Retirement Residence Search

Get help! A Liana’s advisor has the professional experience to help you find the perfect retirement residence that fits your lifestyle. This itself will remove a majority of the stress of transition. Lianas has an extensive network of professional and experienced partners that are able to assist you as you navigate through the challenging transition.

As a consulting service, Lianas provides a customized solution and practical action plan to meet your specific needs. Take Mr. Dorey for example, who was looking to relocate to an independent living residence for seniors. He met with Liana’s advisor and together, they were able to mutually determine the ideal parameters of a senior’s residence so that Mr. Dorey would feel comfortable and happy in his new home.

The Liana’s team performs searches through all available options for their clients based on a database of over 3000 senior communities and retirement homes throughout Canada. Tours are then scheduled based on the selection of possible matches.  A Lianas Senior Advisor accompanies the family on these tours and provides guidance and helpful advice throughout the search process. Once the appropriate retirement residence is chosen, the next step is actually moving.

Step Two: Downsizing

Moving can be a traumatic experience, especially when you’ve accumulated decades of memorabilia and “stuff”. Luckily, your Lianas Service Advisor will be with you every step of the way. We have teamed up with professionals that specialize in transitions for seniors who can coordinate your entire transition needs, including downsizing. Here are some tips to help ease you into rightsizing:

  • Start Early – Spring cleaning annually can help prepare you for an eventual move in the future. You are never too young to start sorting and downsizing.
  • Start behind closed doors – sift through and organize closets, cupboards, attics, and basements.
  • One room at a time – keep it simple and straightforward by tackling only one room at a time.
  • Gift it – Distribute things to family and friends, especially family heirlooms.
  • Make donations – Donate all unwanted items that are in good condition to a charitable organization. Remember, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Step Three: Sale of Home or Condo

The final step in the transition is selling your home or condo in order to make the official move into the retirement residence. It can be difficult to say goodbye to a place of memories, no doubt about it. When the time comes, Lianas Services can set you up with the perfect real estate broker specializing in the needs of seniors that can get the best deal for your home. For example, once Mr. Dorey’s house was emptied of clutter, Stefanie Cadou, “a terrific real estate agent,” as stated by Mr. Dorey, stepped in to sell the house. Within one week Mr. Dorey accepted the best of the many offers and the sale formalities were underway. Thrilled with his experience with Lianas Services, Mr. Dorey stated, “Working together they do all the work and do it amazingly well!”
